Mike Wiwchar has always been drawn to understanding how things work — from the molecular machinery of living cells to the legal frameworks that protect the innovations built on top of them.

Growing up in a community shaped by agriculture (Winnipeg, Canada) gave Mike an early appreciation for the science behind what ends up on our plates. That curiosity eventually led him to the University of Nevada, where he earned his Ph.D. in cellular and molecular pharmacology and physiology, studying how ion channels regulate blood vessels in the lungs. It was during a research ethics course that touched on intellectual property that he first glimpsed what a career in patent law could be. After defending his dissertation, Mike headed to the University of Colorado Law School, and never looked back.

What drew him to patent law, and what continues to drive him, is the opportunity to sit at the intersection of science, law, and strategy. Every new client brings a new technology to understand, a new set of inventors to learn from, and a new set of business problems to help solve. Mike brings more than a decade of experience across U.S. and international patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and portfolio management in biotechnology, biologics, pharmaceuticals, agricultural sciences, and food science.

A significant chapter of Mike's career was spent in-house, where he managed a global patent portfolio and worked directly with scientists and leadership to align IP strategy with business goals. That experience gave him a practical fluency in what clients actually need from their patent counsel: clear guidance, well-reasoned recommendations, and counsel that understands the business, not just the science.

At Baldwin IP, Mike works closely with clients to build sophisticated, defensible IP portfolios — getting into the details of their technology and their goals so that every prosecution decision serves a purpose. Colorado's growing biotech and agricultural sectors are a natural home for the kind of work Mike loves most: partnering with innovative scientists and companies to ensure that what they've built is protected, positioned, and ready to grow.
